Don’t trust someone with your money just because they happen to wear a nice suit. I think of that homespun advice every time I read about the latest horrific investment fraud or scandal that fleeced people out of their money.

You want to reward the sacker or your baby sitter for a job well done, but by the time you pay for gasoline and groceries and cover the huge stack of bills, there’s not much left for tipping.

Teach your young consumers to say “no.” As we head into the home stretch of the holiday shopping season, retailers will be pulling out all the stops and marketing gimmicks to prime the cash registers. Getting our children comfortable enunciating the “no” word can help minimize damage to their wallets or credit ratings.

Youngsters can’t relate to the Big Three CEOs who went before Congress and pleaded for billions in taxpayer dollars. But many children do know what it’s like to knock on doors and ask for handouts for scouting, sports teams and schools.
